The peristaltic pump is a type of electrical pump that distributes fluids or transfers fluids in a uniform and controlled manner with the help of rollers, a tube, and a motor. To pump liquids peristaltic pump uses the principle of positive displacement and because it is a type of positive displacement pump it is suitable for pumping a wide range of fluids.

As its name suggested peristaltic pump, the way it moves fluid is similar to the peristaltic movement that happens in the human body to transfer liquid and food. Fluid only passes through tubing inside the pump, and because of this fluid does not get in contact with any of the mechanisms of the pump. This is the reason why peristaltic pumps are ideal for moving chemicals or liquids that you don’t want to get cross-contamination.

How does a Peristaltic Pump work?

Fluid come inside of the pump through the inlet as its rollers or shoes rotate, compressing the hose or tube against the pump housing. Fluid gets trapped inside the tube by a roller and expelled when a subsequent roller passes over it. During roller rotation, a vacuum form in the tube, drawing in more fluid for the next roller pass.

When the tube is completely closed (squeezed) between the roller and the track, the pump’s positive displacement action prevents backflow, eliminating the need for check valves when the pump isn’t running.

Fluid is never touched by anything other than the pump tube or hose, thereby eliminating the possibility of contamination from either the pump or the fluid.
